The International Parking Lot Museum is a network of community museums, each occupying a parking space and offering in-car AR experiences of art, natural history, science, engineering, civics,..with global and hyperlocal views.
sThe International Parking Lot Museum is a new action research platform exploring what a museum might be in the Metaverse. The primary research questions involve how it intersects with the real world, and how it is managed at a global+ scale. Projects include smart signage in parking facilities, multiuser AR for in-car use, plugin architecture for XR applications, low-code community-designed and curated exhibits, virtual support for idiosyncratic, boutique collections, organizing hyperlocal instances as a DAO.
Distributed around the world in 162 ft2 (15.05m2 ) chunks, IPLM engages the people of local communities with extended reality explorations through the lens of parking. Exhibits of local and global interest in art, science, design, engineering, economics, and culture will be available. We will build and support these exhibits as a meta-community of local champions who possess a passion for learning and the free-flowing exchange of ideas.
Why parking lots? Parking is the silent consequence of Car Culture. It affects our time, our space, our environment, our security, and our comfort. IPLM brings the history and consequences of Parking to the fore in ways that encourage innovative sociocultural and technical thinking as Car Culture (and Culture as a whole) evolve through the 21st Century. There are 4-5 parking spaces per vehicle on the planet. Parking lots in many ways have degraded senses of community and they certainly degrade the environment. IPLM hopes to mitigate some of these ills by flipping the story and making parking lots the centers of communities and increase the cultural productivity of largely.unused real estate.
